It was named after its designer, Dr. <a title=\"Shinobu Ishihara\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shinobu_Ishihara\">Shinobu Ishihara<\/a>, a professor at the <a title=\"University of Tokyo\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Tokyo\">University of Tokyo<\/a>, who first published his tests in <a title=\"1917\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1917\">1917<\/a>. <sup id=\"_ref-ishihara1917_0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ishihara_color_test#_note-ishihara1917\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>It consists of a number of colored plates, each of which contains a circle made of many different sized dots of slightly different colors, spread in a seemingly random manner. Within the dot pattern, and differentiated only by color, is a number. What, or even if, a number is visible indicates if and what form of color blindness the viewer has. The full test consists of thirty-eight plates, but the existence of a deficiency is usually clear after no more than four plates.<\/p>\n<p>Common plates include a circle of dots in shades of green and light blues with a figure differentiated in shades of brown or a circle of dots in shades of red, orange and yellow with a figure in shades of green; the first testing for <a title=\"Protanopia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protanopia\">protanopia<\/a> and the second for <a title=\"Deuteranopia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deuteranopia\">deuteranopia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/e\/e0\/Ishihara_9.png\/240px-Ishihara_9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: left\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.9em\">Example of an Ishihara color test plate.
